Heroes Series #2 Benkei

Inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period, Manekistefy created the “Heroes Series”: 10 prints dedicated to the Japanese full back tattoo.

Manekistefy has dedicated the second print to a hero that has a significance for her: Benkei,

a character that actually existed in the 12th century: he was Ushiwakamaru’s loyal servant and warrior; the first Japanese warrior to demonstrate the ideals of the Samurai.

Benkei sacrificed his life to protect his companion Ushiwakamaru.

He represents the qualities of loyalty and sacrifice in the protection of others.
