In this painting, I wanted to represent a mollusc in the Venetian dialect “Garusolo”. Edible molluscs with a characteristic flavour, but not only: The Murex snail is a simple seabed scavenger; it feeds on the carcasses of crustaceans and other molluscs. The pigment was extracted from the mollusc to dye silk and fabric purple; the colour that adorned the robes of kings and popes. This is how even a humble mollusc became indispensable in serving man’s vanity.
